When I worked at New Orleans Arms Co in the 80s I would occasionally see small puffs of smoke when engraving with hammer & chisel. I traced it down to the sulphur cutting oil we used at the lathe which I also used for graver lube.
Sandy Popovich sent me a small bottle and I was able to recreate it. Watch very closely at the tip of the chisel and you'll see it.
