Been covered at least 15 times over the years... you wrote the advice...

http://www.engraverscafe.com/showth...ners-and-the-never-ending-redundant-questions

<"There are two types of beginners in my opinion, informed beginners and give me everything on a plate beginners. Hand Engraving, at times requires one to think outside the box, critical thinking, how do I hold a cup for engraving is an example, I would first see what I can think up, what contraption could I make to hold the cup, if I saw it did not work, I would then search the forum, not only creating one set of words but several if not many set of search words, many times a result title does not even come close to what I was requesting but the result is not always in the title (don't judge a book by its title/cover) read the thread you'll be surprised in what you find.

When you read a thread don't just read the first post, read the whole thing, are there times its just small talk that goes of topic, yes, but if you don't you might just miss the one piece of valuable information you were looking for.">

This does not apply to Carlos, only everyone else?

Like I said, been covered. As have all the "best" of the refinishers to send your stuff to...

Maybe you can make another archive for those services and put all of them in one place?

You were advertising that you did EVERYTHING "in house". Annealing is not all that hard to figure out, nor is color case hardening.

AND the equipment is relatively inexpensive, compared to all the other stuff you need to do everything in house.

These folks used to do it and they can re-case color if needed.

Thank you for a useful reply! Much appreciated I'm sure others will benefit from this in the future.
Compared to other useless replies, just going to have to follow the advise of others (yes plural) and have to block your useless comments, don't know what your trying to accomplish here Brian, but as of now your useless rants and page long replies will fall on deaf ears, as it does with others, thank God the forum has a block option. Im not the first to call you out on your attitude/senseless replies (not all of course) but there non the less, but if you use the search function you will find it. Good luck to you and your very interesting, or not. Adios

Not sure if the moon is in the wrong phase or just what but it seems many of us are just a bit too edgy. I find Brian comments to be most of the time very informative and have helped me with here and there tid-bits. I am not sure and it does not matter just how long Brian has been pushing metal and other things around but much of what he has to say is full of experience of having been there and done that and you do not need to go there, thanks. There are others on this site who very willing pass along this of sage advice. Thanks

Brian,
I like your idea of having a separate archive for services - Sam? Also, Brian thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with the folks on this website. I don't say that enough to everyone who is generous and shares their information with others.

Check with local or at least nearby gunsmiths. Many have the equipment to anneal and CC.

Working with local gunsmith is dangerous, having the equipment does not mean that you know how to use it. Most "gunsmith" are so only in title, they are only "parts exchange" specialist and would not know how to use properly a file without a user manual or polish without using power tools. My point is, do not use people if you have not seen their work, there are 10 maybe 20 gunsmiths in the country I would ask to do work for me and none of them are cheap or fast that is why it is often better to do the work yourself if it is easy and does not require specialize equipment.

Carlos, go to the custom gunmakers web site acgg.org and look for metal finishers. Mike Tulowitski in CO does case color so would also be able to anneal. Check with him and other acgg members.

I would anneal only if---
1 It was to be recase-colored. Then it should be dead soft.
2 It was too hard too cut after polish. Most times the case hardening is only skin deep and the metal cuts fine after polishing.
Try cutting in a hidden area.
Hope my 2 cents helps.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, Thierry. My local gunsmith is also a fine custom rifle builder and does excellent CCH. I see your point though; if you can't get proof of the gunsmith's ability, stick with a known entity, like Doug Turnbull.

Winston Churchill takes a file to case hardening and simply files it off. It's a very thin skin.
