Clean and simple

Per customer request, I often use a "single point" background on scroll work.
Depending on the desired effect, it can either be left shiny and it will sparkle when turned in the light. Or it can be muted with Ferric Chloride to make for a dark but interesting background.
I use a 120 deg. graver, tilted slightly...start deep on one side and end the cut shallow at a designated point on the other side.
Simply make your cuts into a "fan" shape, and your done with the background.
BUT----it has to be done cleanly!

Brian,
Thanks for that tip, that's pretty cool. I'll bet it's a lot harder to do it right than it sounds.

For what it's worth....I do not claim that this background treatment is an original idea of mine. I learned it from another engraver.
I've just been doing it so long, I just don't remember who showed it to me.

I remember you demonstrating that technique at Scott's Engrave-In during your seminar. Thanks for following up with it here and reminding me of it. I think you posted a picture of the SAA somewhere last week. Getting old, CRS!
