For your engraving and artistic pleasure, here's a brochure from Rudolph Kornbrath. Kornbrath employed Josef Fugger who Churchill worked with later at Griffen & Howe. Kornbrath was a major influence on American engravers, such as Churchill, Prudhomme, and others.

Many people today as in the past believe that ornate and highly decorated jewelry, arms, wearing apparel, utilitarian pieces, etc. possess a magical/spiritual quality endowed with the owner that gives them great power bound up in beliefs that instill a greater confidence. That is the source of many myths and legends such as the "golden fleece", "the Shroud of Turin", "the magic slippers", "the sorcerers stone", "the holy grail (the lost ark- the special chalice as in the Indiana Jones movie, etc). These beliefs can be quite real. In these instances, perhaps the same applies to the finest engravings, their intrinsic material/spiritual worth, as well as their monetary and sentimental values can't be fully or subjectly measured!

One example as referred to above: The Holy Grail was a Biblical artifact said to have supernatural powers. A person that drank from the cup was granted eternal life and youth, though this effect would last only until they crossed the Great Seal that marked the entrance to the cup's resting place at the Temple of the Sun. Water poured from the Grail could heal severe injuries, such as a gunshot wound.

HistoryEdit
The Holy Grail was believed to be the cup that Jesus Christ used during the Last Supper. It was also used to catch Christ's blood at his crucifixion. The cup was then entrusted to Joseph of Arimathea. It was said that the Grail could give to whomever drank from it eternal life.[1]

Having only seen a few Colts and a long gun or two by Kornbrath, it's exciting to see this variety in one place. Thanks Sam and Sam!

And I just remembered an occasion where a great nephew or grandson of Kornbrath asked me to re create his style to replace a Colt the family had lost. Am I ever glad I didn't take that job. I can barely re create my last gun much less the likes of this man!!

The Kornbrath brochure brings to mind a point that I would like to make. I also have an original Kornbrath brochure. I bought it at the Las Vegas Antiques arms show. I have seen and handled numerous Kornbrath engraved guns. Likewise, I encountered most of them at the LVAAS. My point is, that if you want to experience the best in classic and contemporary arms engraving, make it a point to visit the annual FEGA show, which is located within the LVAAS. Within the FEGA show are some of the best contemporary engravers displaying their latest works. Outside the FEGA show are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of engraved guns and knives from every period of history. The LVAAS is not like any other gun show you may have attended. It is THE premier gun show in the world and it attracts visitors and collectors from around the globe. If you are serious about gun or knife engraving, make it a point to get to the FEGA show in January. You will not be disappointed.

Roger, you really peaked my interest with this post. I've been meaning to get to the States to see one of these shows and it's a very real possibility I'll be able to make it in January. I'm ever so slowly transitioning from jewellery to engraving and I'd love to get some exposure on high end pieces as they just don't appear in this country. Just a question, but do you require any form of firearms license to attend these shows (not as an exhibitor)? Might seem like a silly question but wanted to double check

I think there maybe some law about letting Australians into the show :)

No, you don't need a licence to attend the show...................I'm a Kiwi and they let me in every year :)

You will enjoy the show and the people you meet......both will inspire you.

And after all, isn't that a big part of the deal........there's a very good reason I go every year. It recharges my batteries like you wouldn't believe. :)

And Las Vegas is cool.......where else can you go for a gondola ride with your wife and friends on the second story of a casino. And the gondola guy is singing Italian opera.....unreal :)

Cheers
Andrew
