I know a lot of you seen these final drawings on Facebook. But here are the steps during the drawing process. Two different schools of thought on the backbone shape/style. I know in the past drawing efforts I realized I had ignored some of the basic fundamentals, and am in a sense starting over on the correct path... I hope.. That's why I wanted to share these with y'all! Thank you ahead of time for any tips , comments and/or bashing.. Lol

Thanks for posting your progressive drawings. They look great. Twos question for you. When you start to fill in the leaves on the backbone, do you start at the base of the scroll and work your way to the tight curve, or do you start at the end and work your way back to the beginning of the scroll?
Hope that makes sense. Also ,what is the actual size of your sketches? Thanks again for posting these.
Cheers
Don

Don, here are some pics to show size. And I normally draw the leaves from spine-up .

Sketches are looking good. I'll make a few observations that I think are important. In the top sketches, the second scroll doesn't appear connected to the first. You can bring it from behind a leaf but you should be able to either see or sense that juncture.
Next would be to to leave some space between the leaf and backbone. Some of the leaves top lines appear almost connected to the backbone witch makes them look like leaves coming off of a line. The second to last sketch is an example a good backbone until the last scroll where the leaf was shaded all the way to the backbone. I do think the backbone could be a bit heavier to support the weight/size of leaves coming off of it.
Last would be to vary your leaves a bit. The second to last sketch has all 3 point leaves coming off. It gets tedious. The very last sketch has far fewer leaves but is a far more interesting sketch visually. Your eye follows the scroll and there is more variation to see. The last sketch does have a problem with the second scroll not attaching to the first.
Hope this is of use. Sorry I don't use photoshop so I can't draw over what you have to show you. If you can't see it pm me and I'll do a quick sketch.
Keep it up. Your scrolls are well formed and most of your leaves are great. It's just a few small points that will make a huge difference.
Layne

Thanks for the tips southern.. Some of the shade lines are heavy due to the pencil I'm using. Just ordered a .3 drafting pencil so I can get details just right. I see what your talking about so no need for a sketch to explain. Adding different elements and leave each time I draw a new scroll design. I'm trying not to make the same mistake I did before and get all crazy with the design. Alot of the process pics had several changes between taking the pics . the transition from scroll to scroll is an area I have struggled with for awhile. So thank you for your suggestions on how to deal with that area. And I agree, I brought the shade lines a lil close to the spine making them look thin.

If I was going to comment on anything , it would be maybe too much white space between the end tendril and the leaves . And maybe that's because I'm used to seeing other works where it's a little closer . Nice work over all do you have some steel Cut it on ?

For me shading on paper has always been an effort in futility. I don't think I'm alone on this. I've found that enlarging the project makes the job much easier. Trying to shade with pencil on an actual size drawing drives me nuts.

I plan on cutting at least one of the designs on metal just see what it looks like when I can get the time.. If I were drawing a design for an actual project I wouldn't shade it. Just shaded these so everyone could see what I see in my head , there about anyhow.

Do another one where you erase the backbones all together and have leaves coming off either side ... tricky but can look good I think.

You're doing some really nice drawings there. Nothing in particular to pick on for me

Dani. I have an old drawing somewhere I did like you say to try. I will post it if I can find it. And yes I admire Rays style along with a few others.

My bad. That was before I made some changes to the old one.

That's not a kind of scrollwork I've put much effort into. I got your sketch into sketchbook and messed around with it...

Keen for anyone to grade me on my attempt and hope maybe it helps you Jared.

I find that colouring in the background any overly large or small background areas pop.

It would have been neater but it's bed time so I rushed some bits

enjoy

Thank you Dani for taking the time to sketch up a revised version of this scroll. I posted that drawing awhile back, and didn't get awhile lotta help on it. But yes I have come along way from that. I still look at it now and then to remind myself what not to do. Lol and I like your version of it too.

It was a bit of a tongue in cheek request because last time I attempted it was a disaster, this time a minor disaster... its a hard design style to master. Your drawing is looking good.

I tried again to break out of my comfort zone and do something without backbones and scrolls etc. Came out better, but easier on a small piece than a whole design. Keep posting your sketches mate, it's great to see them
