I always start by looking at the design and the harmony with the canvas. Then I have a look at the execution the cleanliness.
On the canvas you are right to go for the best I see a lot of engravers putting nice work on a worthless canvas ore worse, ruining a nice canvas because of the lack of skills ore not enough research on what style should be used depending on the canvas.
