no matter what, good design never comes from a graver. good design comes from a pencil. i do use transfers. but-- i draw oversized on paper . when i have a drawing that pleases my eye, i then scan, send to corel, size it and print the transfer. this isn't always an option. one is sometimes forced to direct draw on an item.the bottom line will always be the pencil.
cutting a design is another thing. whether direct drawn, a transfer, or even a professionally provided design, you have to look ahead of the actual point of cut. by doing this, you may see a bump, a lump, or bad spot. by looking ahead, you'll develop the ability to avoid the bad spot and just correct on the fly as some say.
