From the article:

"Poachers have been a serious threat to many endangered species over the past few years. The rising affluence of many Asian nations has driven a huge demand for animal parts used in traditional eastern medicine. According to the Smithsonian, many endangered animals are turned into remedies such as Asian elephants foot to treat hernias, Sun Bear gallbladder to treat everything from burns to asthma to cancer, various tiger parts to cure toothaches and protect against malicious curses, among other maladies, and rhino horn to relieve fevers, lower blood pressure, and cure cancer. None of these claims have been backed by scientific studies, but that hasn’t stopped the demand for these deadly remedies.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, in 1960 there were over 2,000 northern white rhinos in the wild. Twenty years later, only 15 animals remained due entirely to poaching."

It's strange that people in this world still believe some of these things.:eek::shock:

Thanks "Doc" for your research on this subject! It's a pretty sad state of affairs. It shouldn't have to come down to this!

I believe according to the article, there is one male. Apparently, there are two females. So in fact there are three.

Down here in Texico, we're doing embryo transplants AND cloning rabbits, sheep, cattle and horses.

The first option should be embryo transplants, whereby you take the ovulating EGGS from one or both of the females, mix with a little of the males semen, get a viable egg going, then put it in a black rhino female host to carry the fertilized egg to birth.
With one collection/month of say 30 eggs per rhino, you could possibly raise 10 or so white rhinos from each batch. PER MONTH PER FEMALE.

So simple, EVEN Texas A&M can do it ! GIGEM!

PS- This technique was pioneered by Dr. Woodrow Sharp, DVM, of Castroville, Texas.

UPDATE-
The government has decided to give the embryo transplant the go ahead.
At present, they are seeking a volunteer to collect the semen.
