Looks like forge welding.

Do you presoak in borax before firing ?

Or, what do you use to prevent scaling ?

bevore welding the metall must be absolute clean I use plastic gloves and brush them with an tooth brush and thooth creme and water so the metall has a kind of lotus effect. Thats all.
after welding and file i put them in fluoron but you can use borax as well and silversolder the sides. Than you can forge the metall down. But you have to annel it from time to time.

Interesting pressure plate / clap you have there. Would like to know more about it. Very nice looking rings too.

It looks like a regular jeweler's hand vise to me:

normaly the most use Bindings with steel plates and wire or plates with screws but I had the old vise so i use that one.
If you use plates you dont need so mutch heat than with the vise.
I like the vise because the timeline from welding to liquid aloys on the floor is longer. :)
