Lately I've seen several Ruger and S&W stainless engraved with a punch dot background. My last Ruger I engraved was stainless and I wanted do punch dot. Several attempts caused the tool to mushroom. I was using the set that is sold by GRS. I tried hardening on but no success. What is the secret?

Unless you are doing gold or silver id stick to ngraver dot punches. Guns are just to hard for jewelry punches.

I was working on a stainless Vaquero this past week and used the Ngraver #2 punch. Everything worked great until I got to the loading gate. That flattened the face of my punch right out. I really like his punches and have ordered a few more as replacements. Any other suggestions on avoiding this pitfall in the future? Annealing the gate or hardening the punch?

Thanks
Dan

makes one wonder why. the gate just sits there, does very little. no reason i can think of as to why they're made so hard.
