Dave, normally on scopes you turn the focusing knobs on the rack in opposite directions to each other to increase resistance. I'm not familiar with your scope so don't know if this will help.
Yes. Just looked into it. Hold the left knob and right knob on the focussing rack and turn them in opposite directions. That is turn one forwards and one backwards simultaneously.
Just checked my scope on the back of the scope/ rack are two adjustment screws to tighten the rack/gear/ scope adjustment.
Forget the paper shim thing..
When doing shimming of rack & pinion stuff, bear in mind NOT to bottom out the pinion teeth against the bottom of the rack. Paper is normally about .003" thick, which is a LOT for such closely machined items. Get out the micrometers and check some common items for thickness, and keep some cuttings in a marked envelope, such as aluminum foil, paper, cigarette pack cellophane, and other oddball stuff which might come in handy some day.
