Macrophotography on Steroids Meeting Guild of Natural Science Illustrators

Dear GNSI Members and Friends,

The Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, Washington, D.C. Chapter has a special meeting planned for March 17th. Our presenters will be coming in from Connecticut to show us their unique equipment for producing macrophotography on steroids. For both artists and scientists who seek a vastly improved way to portray and study the micro world, this will be a must-see presentation!

PLEASE NOTE: This meeting will be located in a DIFFERENT ROOM. See “LOCATION" below.

EVENT DATE: Tuesday, March 17, 2015

TIME: 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

PRESENTATION: "The Tiniest Among Us: In Detail, in Color and in Focusâ€￾ by Mark Smith

It is enlightening for people to hear about a discovery, but to actually see the discovery can be life changing. For decades, the general public has had limited access to the information learned and recorded by the scientific community, because the images are simply too unrealistic, out of focus or lack the colors needed to be noticed. Mark Smith of Macroscopic Solutions will be talking about how the Macropod, a device related to macrophotography, is capable of generating high-resolution and highly magnified images of small objects that are completely in focus and full of color.
His presentation will describe the scientific significance behind the amazingly sharp images captured with the Macropod and the methods used to produce them. In the context of their research, Mark will provide examples from some of the scientific researchers using the device and the collaborations formed as a result.
Mark’s educational background includes a master degree in Structural Geology from the University of Connecticut. His partners are Daniel Saftner (colleague and Returned Peace Corps Volunteer) and Annette Evans (Ph.D. student in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Connecticut).
