Thanks to Jay Close for sending along a third McKenzie handout of machinist drawings for his chasing hammer and chisel handles. It's in the Tips Archive and is Handout #3 in the McKenzie thread.

In Handout #3 on 3rd page there's mentioned " Graver: Mo-MAX Cobalt".

Yes, many of us used momax cobalt back in the day. It was probably the best material back then.

Vague recollection, not sure why or where; maybe McKenzie's videos... I seem to think I heard him say he preferred 1045 steel for chasing hammers. Relatively low carbon content allowed the steel to be heated red hot and then quenched, and it wouldn't require tempering. It was both tough enough and hard enough, without getting brittle. Sounded like it would make sense.
