Question: Hello from NC

Hello everyone,
To introduce myself I am a high school student from NC, and I have a passion for art. I enjoy the medium of graphite immensely! After several years of art classes (which I am continuing) I decided that while I love working in graphite, I would like to be able to represent my work in a more permanent and durable way. From there I began experimenting with some copper pipe, a dremel, and an electric engraver made by dremel also. From the pipe I would cut and hammer out sections of the pipe, then drill a key ring hole in it and polish the hole piece out. I also experimented with flame scaling and patinas. Then I began engraving images onto the plates. After enjoying this for several months I decided that the lack of precision of the dremel was limiting what images and designs I could engrave. Luckily this Christmas I was gifted a texturing/ engraving kit sold by rio grande containing six graver handles and 6 gravers. Much to my surprise after opening the box the gravers were not installed into the handles......and this is how I found this forum.

I have attempted to use my apparently lacking google-fu to learn how to correctly install the gravers, but I have not found any reliable sources on this. It would be of much help if someone could explain how I should go about installing the gravers? The tools list for beginners was an awesome resource by the way. For a ball vice does this look http://http://www.amazon.com/ENGRAVING-BLOCK-Setting-Jewelry-Rubber/dp/B00BCNVGRA/ref=pd_sim_sbs_ac_5?ie=UTF8&refRID=1JWJ0GWC270F9FY6244Zlike a good one or should I try to work on a DIY one? I simply don't have the money for a $300 plus vice yet. Also what is a suitable weight chasing hammer? Apologies in advance for all these questions, but many thanks to those who respond! :)
Thank you for your time,
Grathlong

Mitch is in the Charlotte area, I'm in the Greensboro area, David Bain is in Wilson, plus there are more throughout the state, so one of us should be able to help guide you through your travel "down the path of learning and frustration."

Grathlong, You are a very fortunate fella for all of the help that these folks are happy to give you. This forum is the exact place you need to be. I started out with no clue on what to do with a graver in my hand. I too am into art from the commercial realm. Without these guys on this forum I am afraid I would be still putting bandaids on my finger tips (you may find this out for yourself).Great to have you here and pay attention to these fellas for they are pros...

yes, welcome to the forum. the trouble with this place, it's populated with a bunch of old people. old fogies, if you will. your infusion of youth will be a welcome relief ! i have some ancient "e-books". tho quite old, they do show such as how to "bury" a graver in the handle. some other interesting stuff there too. if nothing else, they are interesting to read. if you want to look at a few--- jayismonk450@gmail.com i'll hook you up !

Wow guys thank you for all the welcomes and help, this makes me super excited! I would be absolutely honored to come visit some of your shops and perhaps pick up a few tips. I have a feeling that engraving is the sort of hobby that is great to have some instruction so that I can get started on the right path. I'm about 30 minutes north of Raleigh, but I would be happy to travel if needed! Monk I am getting ready to shoot you an email, thank you so much.
Thanks again everyone,
Grath

The one quick tip I can provide is that for engraving think of your pen and ink drawings - it's very similar in style.

Montgomery County Community College has a summer engraving class. You have to register in late January to get into it. It fills fast as only about 8 students are accepted on a first come basis. Jesse Houser is the instructor. If you attend, be sure and tell Jesse that John Cantrell and family say hi. You will have a great 10 day learning experience in Troy, NC

As far as hammers go, check out beadsmith. Buy a couple and grind one down smaller so you can compare the different cuts

Sorry Mitch, I guess I'm getting too old to remember stuff like where people are located. Still hoping to meet up with you sometime when I'm in Blowing Rock. The Little Lady likes to visit Cherokee some times (casino?!) and we may try and get together then.

Grath , I live in Eden and if you are north of Raleigh we may be able to link up sometime. Just exactly where are you located?
