Use a pitch bowl if you want to start right away...
Make one out of a small stainless mixing bowl and use a lawnmower tire as a base.
You can put lead in the bottom (if you need extra weight), pour a layer of plaster over that - and melt the pitch on top.

until your lines are straight uniform in depth and width use any vise especially if you are hammer and chisel cutting.
When you begin to cut good lines and want the turning vise to help you cut better curved lines, maybe your grandfathers work will be done.

good luck, try that cut an inch everyday thing. I bet 1 will turn into 2.
