Question: Initials

I have to put three initials on a knife-a folder. What I wanted to know which sided do you put them on?? Does it really matter?? Is there a right way?? Give me yer .02.

The right way, is to simply ask the owner... but if'n it's gonna be a gift, that's a wee bit difficult to do.

You got right handers, left handers and ambidextrous people.

Some carry in odd places.

Most want it to read right side up when it's open and the blade is facing down.

So, if you narrow things down that way - especially if it has a clip on the opposite side, you might be safe?

I've only "eaten" one lettering job on a knife over the years. My fault. I didn't glance at the instructions from the dealer before I cut it. Guy wanted vertical.

Was a small Tiffany penknife - worn on a chain around the neck apparently...

there's tradition, and then there's client wishes. i always ask. tankards also can present a problem. the initials should face outboard when held by the individual. but what if they don't want it that way ? i just ask, and make a note on the writeup
