This coin was much discussed by the OHNS today and after more pics were posted it clearly shows that it is a fake coin. The carver, who said it cut normal to him thought it was real, he bought it at a pawn shop. Apparently there are a boat load of fake Morgans out there. As a newbie with coins I found this very informative. FYI Someone recommended weighing them as the easiest way to do a quick check to see if they are genuine or not.

One local coin shop here in Grand Forks got scammed and they bought a stack of the fake Morgans. It was tuition for the lesson learned. I was reading on one website a year or two ago where they were showing how to identify them. One even has a completely wrong year on them. The Chinese are making Liberty nickels and Indian Head pennies too. :(

I haven't seen anything telling us from what hight the coin was dropped. If it was over a mile, I surprised that the damage is so slight!

I've poured molten gold and silver into cold water and ice water to get free-forms for jewelry. Had it splatter but never crack like this. Fred

I have brought about 75 morgan dollars off ebay to use in coin carving and 2 were fake plus 1 seated half dollar I brought was fake..Best to google fake morgans and learn about them..Trade dollars on ebay are really bad about being fakes.

HI, I never had that happen to me, but I have run into voids in old coins. They just sort of flake up in a small area, I stopped using coins as they come.
