Case Hardened Knife Scales

I was sent a pair of Gold and Silver inlay Knife Scales that I Case Hardened with Bone and Wood.

Very pretty, nice work. Did you quench in a bath with air bubbles in circulation? Air bubbles in the quench are the secret of a more colorful and varied color.

Well done with the colour hardening...very difficult to do. I tried to do this process for over two years and never got such a good effect. Also when I did a pair of knife scales like this, they warped in the quench and were therefore useless. They have been in a drawer for the last 20 years as a reminder that colour hardening is fraught with difficulty.

that is a keeper, for sure. how long did you have to get this to "cook" ? i assume that heat was used to do this
