416 stainless steel vs commercially pure titanium, which is easier, better to engrave? How do they compare? I would like to make some folding knives which will have engraved bolsters, and/or scales, and I have yet to buy the supplies for it.

Those of you who have engraved both, which would be a better choice?

The 416 stainless is harder and my tool life shows it, but I prefer it over the Grade 2 cp titanium. I find the Ti is similar to 6061 T6 aluminum; gummy, sticky, and difficult (for me) to control depth in. I'm sure it is a function of tool geometry and experience, there are certainly people who engrave Ti very successfully.

Thanks for the answers, than I think I will go with the 416 stainless for the bolsters.
