I see a lot of novice as well as master engravers looking for specialised services related to engraving and the jewellery industry posted in the forums. Why don't we all make a short list of skills that you have to make people on the forum aware of what you can do?

I will go first to break the ice:
Goldsmithing (all aspects of the trade)
Refining
Enamelling
Gem Setting
Jewelley design (drawing and painting in watercolour)
Gem cutting (cabochons, faceting and carving)

More recently:
Engraving
Knife making

My real job is in a machine shop dealing primarily with aluminum and stainless steel. Processes I am familiar with are:

Vertical milling (CNC and manual)
Turning
TIG welding

(Kind of a short list for being there 14 years)

All I've really got is the ability to keep plugging away.
Did programming for over 30 years, lots of it down at the machine / system level so I've always been good at 'do this one little thing. Now do it again. And again. (repeat several hundred times). Now you're beginning to get a result.'

most, if not all the engraving-related skills i have are self-taught. heat treating, drawing, tool shaping/sharpening, design concept development. then along came the meeks book, then the forum. to say "self-taught", may be a discredit to the knowledge i've gained from many, many forum members that have generously shared their ideas. perhaps "self-taught" is not really the case, afterall.

Skills? I'm a generalist. I seem to be good at everything but not world class at anything. But specifically:
Associates Degree in Building Construction
3 Bachelors Degrees: Economics, Accounting and Technical Writing
2 Masteemrs Degrees: Telecommunications and Management
Certified Project Manager
20 years in Internet Financial Doftware Development
10 years Upper Level Math Teacher

Engraving related:
Light Gunsmithing
Hot Bluing

Music:
Banjo, Dobro, Bass, Mandolin, bagpipes and woodwinds

All of this is probably due to my ADHD. Like I said a little of everything.

Skills in order picked up.

Calligraphy
Leatherwork
Script engraving ($45 battery pen) which I used professionally at work for a year before upgrading to electric and inverted cone burs.

Real engraving with power chisels...

Knife making (needs work but good fun)

(work) operating a laser engraver and a machine engraver, (single diamond point dragging around). We also heat transfer designs onto shirts and other things, make name badges, electrical plates, and custom t-shirt designs. Made one for myself with my name and an engraving symbol.

"planning to learn enameling, wood carving, jewellery making, and much more"

I suppose I'm a jack of all trades, master of 1.
First and foremost a Jeweler for 28 yrs.
(goldsmith, fabrication and all stone setting, casting etc etc)
Engraver
basic gunsmithing
Light machining
Woodwork (one day I'll put all those tools to use)
Reluctant flintlock builder.
amateur watchmaker
And with a good rice shovel in hand I'll dig you a mean hole.
As for hobbies
Skateboarder, Fiddle player, Damn good bass fisherman, golfer, rock climber, occasional bow hunter but a hell of a shot with a rifle, (really anything that fires a projectile at high speed except for a driver or long iron) mostly vegetarian gun toting liberal.
I'm either really versatile or a little off in the head. Haven't figured out which one. My wife thinks both.

After 48 years on the farm..............
-can plow a pretty straight line and make it deep if needed
-use a few hand tools
-drive just about anything with 2-10 wheels
-got some practice drawing during boring farm meetings and church meetings
-did some martial arts and am proud to admit that I've never had to find out whether it would help me out of trouble
-still married after 32 years- made two kids, found another, and bought two more.....have learned a bit of patience and perseverance which helps at times with engraving
-have avoided being voted out of town but they like to keep me locked up in my shop just for good measure

Gerry;
You must be 110 years old to have gotten all that education and work experience and learned all those other skills.
Cheers
Don

Lol Don, 16 years of college. 12 of which were executive programs done at night and on weekends while working full time. No more than 4 hrs sleep each night helps too.
