Hi all, a few weeks ago I visited a vintage machinery and steam restoration place open day here in Queensland, Australia, as I do every year, some times they have antiques and other things for sale, well it was the happiest day of the year for me, on the ground amongst the rusted tins and old tools I came across this little rusted beauty, a Winchester Model 1892 frame, total cost $5.00 bucks , I have started to restore it, as I plan to engrave it and have it as a wall hanger, I think is going to be a nice project, I have most other parts that I bought from a gun show the other day, even an original .25/20 caliber octagon barrel :clapping:, I know what you will be thinking when you see the photos, but as this will be the closest I will ever get to engraving a real gun, it will be worth my trouble to clean it up, it is already looking good, this are the before pictures, the last two are after a quick sand blasting, more to come, thanks,

Richard.

Looks like a great project !
Don't know your work schedule, but once a week progress shots would be great.
Holler at me ,IF, you need parts.
Don't know if you have a game plan yet , but a Steve McQueen Mare's Leg would be a thought. They're really getting popular over here in Texico.

Hi Tex :), yeah I thought about a Mare's leg, I have been watching Josh Randall on you tube for a while, way before I found this,, sure brings back memories when I was a kid, ;) my idea is to restore this best I can, and then copy all the parts and make a Mare's Leg out of wood, all working parts made of wood, I may take you up on the parts offer, only missing a couple, if I can not get them at the other gun show next month I will PM you, thanks, I have plenty of photos already, I will post progress ones if the forum will permit?

Richard.

Make sure you're not breaking the law here. Best to check that you don't need a shooters license and have it registered. There are restrictions on "wall hangers".

Hi Neo, yes, I have spoken to a gunsmith, and it will have to be deactivated when done, or maybe I will apply for a license before then, who knows, funny how the toughest gun laws here don't stop people getting shot every day hey!!

Here are some more photos, not the final polish yet, about 240 grit wet and dry, I will probably go to 600 grit, all up there was about .016 inch each side filed away because of the pitting , there is still a lot of pitting and more will be removed but not all of it , after all is a 100 year old gun that has been buried some where by the looks of it, but I think it is an improvement, I wish I could get hold of the guy that hammered the crap out of the loading gate , I don't know how I am going to fix that yet, maybe just file it a bit more concave, and blend it in and make it part of the gate?

Nice work Richard, I am working on one at present that was in similar condition. Give me a call one day with the serial number and I will let you know when it was made. Ty.

Hi Ray, still a long way from engraving it yet, but I have a few ideas, will do the whole process when time comes,

Ty thanks, I know when it was made 1913, there is a web site that shows you the year of manufacture when you submit the serial number,

Richard.

Thanks Vlad, hopefully I have learned from JJ Roberts tips on gun restoration, it will take a lot more filing and sanding of the frame but I will try and do my best, here are some more photos, these are some parts that I bought separate , the bolt looks like it has serious damage to the front of it, wonder what happened there, it cleaned up alright, sorry no before shot of that one, the butt plate had some pitting before, the lever is good, sorry for the poor quality photos, as I do this at work during breaks, I only have my phone with me,
more to come,

thanks for looking,

Richard.

Had a bit of work done on the barrel the last couple of days, they must have run out of ammo at some stage and used it as a club  A lot more filing to be done

thanks for looking,

Richard,
