Heading to spend a month in the Pitt Rivers museum in oxford.
My bro and I will be recreating an old masterpiece that is housed there.
Any spots in the neighbourhood that are must sees?
Also resources for jewellery, engraving , or wood work in that town?

We are looking forward to this project. Been building towards it for years.

:thumbsup:Sounds interesting!
Your going to enjoy Oxford & it`s ancient architecture along with more bicycles than you can imagine.
Best thing to do is ask around once there, plenty of hidden things to find out.

I would go out of my way to see Marcus Hunt,I mean, out of my way.

Also,,,,,,,,,,,,,, would sleep on Phils' door steps until he just HAD to open the door.
Then i would hurry in,and find an hiding place in the attic, with the perfect view of the engraving vice(s).

Enjoy!

I'll be pretty busy while there. But I suppose I have to sleep sometime. Might as we'll be on someone's doorstep.
I was in oxford about five years ago. Quite enjoyed the buildings. Some moorish influence.
Spent most hrs in the museum tho.
Will be similar this time too.

Hatton garden is probably the largest hub of jewellery activity in the UK. It is just over an hours journey away and you will find all of the big tool supply houses there aswell as diamond and gold dealers and all manner of gold goodies from antique to contemporary. Walsh tools have the Enset and GRS systems to play with and Meiji and leica scopes. You could pop into purdey and Holland and Holland whilst down there too.
PS. Don't forget your waterproofs.

Thanks Phil. I'm sure I'll be able to squeeze a day out of my project here and there.
That sounds like just the type of thing I'd like.
Thank you.

Hi Marrinan,
My day job? Depends on the day, (and honestly, I take the night shift when I can swing it)
I carve for a living. Occasionally I will work a year or so at a time on large wood projects as they come my way. And throughout it all I trickle out metal work.
Have some other off shoot stuff that calls on me from time to time. But I'm happy with "carver"

We arrived in oxford yesterday. Wandered around with a bit of the privileged access being w acute story from the museum affords us.
There is some amazing craftsmanship in this place. Start laying out the box tomorrow.
Twenty nine days to go. Get cracking fellas.

Thanks phil. It's a great town.
Wood work is mind blowing. Exhausted with all this inspiration.

here is our new box side by side with the old masters.. a real experience.. and a challenge to meticolously reproduce what i believe to be fairly gestural movements by the old master.. long hours, and no days off for the month of september.. a couple hundred years of patina, and it might be getting close..
