Computers are a great tool and I wish i had them to use whenI first started to engrave. Like all tools however they do have their limitations, strengths and weaknesses. I use mine for designing layouts for my scenes using photoshop. I can also use them to compile my pencil drawings on lenlarged templates made from rubbing or smoke pulls.
THE MOST IMPORTANT ENGRAVING TOOL is your pencil. It is actually faster and easier to use once you are used to it. More importantly as Andrew stated it improves you eye hand coordination. This is important not only for drawinf but it gives you finer motor skills that will help you engrave more accurately. What good is a beatuful layout either hand drawn or computer generated if you are a total spazz when you get the graver in your hand.
Draw Draw Draw every day.
Oh Yes.....and the second most important engraving tool is the eraser on the other end of the pencil. As you might guess i like the old wooden #2's
