It appears the Andrew has developed an engraving style that is identifiable and unique to him, something that is coveted by many engravers I trust.

The process is the same as any inlay. Outline the inlaid area, create a cavity, undercut the cavity and hammer the gold in. The undercuts hold the gold in to stop it from falling out. To finish you stone/sand the gold flush with the surface.
It's time consuming work but the results are very rewarding.
