Graver blanks from Turkey?

Man, if Vic only knew how many years and how much mileage he could get out of a joke he played on a dumb kid, he'd never have believed it!

I can't even remember for sure, but I think the "potato incident" was maybe in '72?

(Just went and searched for the "Potato Story" - says it was closer to '69. Maybe my memory was better a coupla years ago?)



That would make it over 40 years ago...

And he's been gone since 2000.


I was thinking about him earlier today, when I was sharpening some gravers with a hone, not a potato.

Wondering what he woulda thought of the geometries we use nowadays...

Umm, the tool porn catalog I was looking at is 2014...

Naturally, it and all the other paper tool porn is kept in the bathroom - where you have serious time to look at it.

That's about the only room that doesn't have a computer in it. Nor a phone. Some places are still sacred...


Page 278. QC gravers and a few "traditional" flats used in my workshops. Says "Made in Turkey".

(Not made outta turkeys as Weldon suggested. I immediately imagined a block with gravy dripping from the jaws. And the flies that rancid turkey and gravy would attract)


I flatly refuse to spend the amount of time/money & bother it takes to make onglettes and rounds from "scratch" from 3/32" square stock with templates.

One of the students asked about 'em and another had brought some with him. I never got a chance to try 'em myself.

Maggots under the scope could make for an interesting day? Maybe have races if you are really bored?

I have used these on gold and silver without problems. I thought they were GRS until I looked at the catalog after your post.

just a couple weeks ago i had a small wasp land on the knife i was working on. 2 things- #1) there is no such thing as a 'small wasp' at 12x under a microscope; and #2) i'm so glad i have conditioned myself to flinch AWAY from the workpiece.

Never had a wasp, but one of those tiny little bugs walked across my work once. As huge as it looked in the scope it was actually kind of hard to spot without it.

I had a similar incident with an ant recently, at x15 they certainly make you jump when they suddenly run across your work.

I have quite a few very high quality gravers made by GMT out of Turkey and they are superb. Beautifully ground and extremely durable. GMT was at the Basel Fair several years ago and was giving out samples by the ton so I picked up quite a few. I can't speak for other Turkish graver brands, but the GMTs are excellent.

I think the Turkish gravers are quenched in RAQUI.. that was my grandfather favorite beverage from the old country

Thanks maplesm & Sam. (And Weldon, for exercising my imagination)

There used to be some QC blanks with the GRS logo on one side and GMT on the other side. Those are fine, I use them daily.

The Rio offering shows neither logo, so I was unfamiliar with 'em.

I will order a dozen or so. Sharpen one or two and try 'em myself. I'll post my "opinion" in a coupla weeks.

I use the GRS/GMT gravers all the time-work just fine for me. I use the double marked QC flats every day. Did not know they went with gravy. Fred
