Heat treating after inlay

I think your statement explains the difference between the difference methods referred to. I have only dealt with carbon steels and their various alloys. Basically 1020. 1075,1095,8620 etc. sometimes 6150. I have never dealt with alloys that required hardening over 1550°F in fact at times I harden at temp slightly below that temp. I know for a fact that some do so called color hardening at temperatures as low as 1250°. They get nice colors but the hardening is lousy. Also some of the hardening is extremely shallow.
