Thank for the kind words!
SamW: It was pretty tough but…. wasn't nearly as hard (rockwell scale) as the older Winchester Model 21's. I used Cmax for most of the cutting. FYI: Cmax works very well with hammer & chisel!

I'm wondering if part of the appeal of this piece is from you're having done it with Hammer & Chisel.

The ability to control the force of each hit would, I think, help a bit with the modeling you've done, especially where you've rolled the edges up a bit. Not that you can't do the same sort of thing when using air assist, but being able to put just a little extra umph on select hits should make it easier.

Also I wonder if the details are actually easier to do with H&C. While it's easy to control the pace & force with air assist I would think that, again, it would be even easier with H&C.

Of course all of that is dependent on having spent the time to build up the skills necessary to do all of this - air assist makes basic cutting a lot easier to learn, at least in my humble opinion.

Thanks folks!
Steve: I don't know about that… I've seen some beautiful sculpting done with air tooling. Sam Alfano, Ken Hunt, Phil Coggin, etc,etc come to mind (my apologies if I've left someone out). On extra hard steel I think the hammer would be an asset though!
