If y'all are driving in for FEGA, I would suggest you bring tire chains or cables, a good sense of humor, and an abundance of patience. If you have an all-wheel or 4-wheel drive vehicle, this is a good time to use it.

They do try VERY HARD to keep I-80 open, but the weather forecast would suggest that some delays and short closures may well occur.

If you don't want to, or can't, put on your tire chains by yourself, I hear there are entrepreneurs waiting in the chain pull-off areas, who will happily install or remove your chains for a fee (don't know if they take credit cards...).

Once you get here, being in the self-contained hotel will be good. Should we get snow in town, I-80 is just about the only road which IS well-cleared - a lot of the side streets never get scraped. (and BTW, my family and friends like the buffet at the Nugget - espec. the breakfast buffet. Tasty.)

Katherine's plan for using the bus over the Sierras sounds like a good one, too. Even if you still face some delays, at least you might be stuck with some fellow engravers...

Travel safe, and see you soon.

Good advice Gary and thanks.
We are supposed to get bad weather all week here in SW Colorado. Hope the runway is cleared and the pilots don't whimp out here on weds for my flight.
Travel safe everyone.

Thanks for the information and links, Gary.
I like the idea of the bus over the pass but I can't figure a good place to leave my car and still get all the gear to the bus stop early in the morning.
Will have to rely on allowing some extra time, chains and all wheel drive.
Plus a substantial donation of some coin to the chain-hookers-up if need be.
Hope to see you there.

Gary,

This is a timely and good warning, especially if like me you are coming from the west coast because we are just starting to face into the mother of all weather cocktails ... a very strong jetstream slamming in soon from the cold north west and it will mix in with el nino warm moist air, with possible spiraling and corkscrewing to result in more wind and rain and that means big snow in Donner Pass. I am playing music in Auburn in the Sierra foothills on Thursday and will be on the Casino bus (with a good book) that Katherine is going to take, $32 return.

What about Palm Springs some year?

best

Gary,
What about Palm Springs some year?

What about any place other than in the depths of winter:eek:

I try to avoid winter travel if at all possible. Airport delays and cancellations as well as hazardous road conditions have been some of the reasons I have not been to FEGA in years. With SCI moving to Dallas in the future, I am interested in FEGA future plans.

At this point SCI moving to Dallas is not official. Once there is something official we will be reviewing our options. About every three years rumors spread about SCI. In most cases I would imagine it is a bargaining tool to keep the Reno/Sparks Convention Authority on its toes. We are always looking at other possible venues but at this point Reno has proven the best choice.
