Hi,

Just reviewing JJ’s tip on getting out stubborn screws.

http://www.igraver.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5896

Thanks JJ :tiphat:

Great Idea and I am sure the penetrating fluid is a good one.

Maybe you would like to try a home brewed old machinists’ trick fluid.

It turns out to be the best penetrating fluid I have ever tried and it works on any frozen screws, bolts, pins.

It is a 50/50 mix of acetone and transmission fluid.

If you put it on a stuck screw It will come out the other side. Let it sit a few minutes and turn out the screw.

P.S. Bass pros shops and other sporting goods stores carry gunsmith screw driver sets (special blade flat screw drivers) for gun screws, fishing reel screws. They are not tapered and fit most precision screws perfectly without screwing them up.

Give it a try or just use it in a pinch..

Here is a real old machinists trick. After applying the penetrating oil place the gun part in the drill press. Put a good screwdriver tip that fits in the drill press chuck. place the screwdriver head in the screw slot and pressure down on the drill press handle. Turn the drill press chuck by putting a rod in the chuck slot or turning the pulley by hand. If this don't take the screw out there are more drastic means. but his will usually always work well.
Now you can engrave the screw.

Another little tidbit is to tighten the screw a smidge before trying to back it out. This seems to break the bond better than trying to just unscrew it. Most screws are seized not by the threads, but rather by the friction fit between the screw head and its seat being rusted.

An old timey method calls for heating a brass rod to red heat and placing it on the screw head. Then hit it with beeswax, which upon melting, will be sucked down into the threads.

Oil of Wintergreen. sinks in and like the acetone/ATF mix, can and will penetrate through and come out the other side!
