Sam/ all fellow cutters,
How do they size gravers? In Sam's overlay tutorial he mentions a #42 flat. Most of my tools I make from drill rod or 5% cobalt hss. and grind to the size i need. I would like to know so I can grind one approx. the same.
Btw, will dead soft copper work for the overlay? Just want to try it out.

thanks everyone,
Kent

Kent: My #42 flat measures .055". I'm not sure how the graver number is determined, but I know that they use a different set of numbers in Europe.

Copper might work, but fine gold is considerably more cooperative than copper. My advice is to maximize your chances for success and use gold for practicing overlays.

I've been thinking about copper vs. gold for overlay practice. I've never done an overlay with copper, but my experience with inlaying copper wire has taught me that it's considerably less malleable than pure gold. This being the case, using a few dollars worth of gold for learning overlay technique is money well spent.
